South Africa

 Global Sumud South Africa is part of a global movement to break the barbaric siege on Gaza, end genocide and war, dismantle settler colonialism and apartheid in Palestine and across the world. We are from  various civil society organisations and social movements. Our coalition is built on the South African tradition of fighting for human rights, liberation and justice. We are committed to internationalist solidarity  and are steadfast in our belief in the  power of ordinary people coming together to resist oppressive systems that have subjugated the global majority for centuries.

Being part of a Global Movement that includes every city in every country we believe, based on our own historical experience of apartheid, that the decades long resistance by Palestinians together with International Solidarity will lead to the end of the illegal Occupation of Palestine and will end the illegal, inhuman decades long siege on Gaza. . 

Global Sumud South Africa commends and aligns itself with  South Africa’s courageous stand at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) wherein it was held that there is a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza. This has been verified by Palestinians who live and die under Zionist aggressive war and genocide, as well as  numerous human rights organisations. We refuse to stay silent in the face of gross violation of human, moral, and legal norms. 

In the ICJ’s 28 March 2024 Order it  ordered Israel to ensure the unhindered provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.  This is an obligation under international law. We come together in the face of flagrant violation of this law and this order where complicit States have failed to uphold their inviolable responsibilities in preventing and punishing genocide and guaranteering the delivery of aid. It is  for this reason that, as part of the global solidarity movement of civilians, we demand that governments move beyond mere rhetoric and take concrete, immediate steps to end the genocide, support this vital mission, and reaffirm the strength of international solidarity in the face of Israel’s total impunity. Together with the growing International Solidarity Movement, governments must act immediately.
