They Tried to Demonize the Flotilla. They Exposed Their Own Crimes to the Entire World Instead [multilingual pdf]
May 19, 2026 MEDITERRANEAN SEA – After nearly 35 hours of sustained naval aggression and violence, the israeli occupation navy has completed its illegal operation against the Global Sumud Flotilla and Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessels in international waters,
violently boarding and abducting all remaining ships and participants. Our closest vessel, Ramle (Sirius), successfully reached around 80 nautical miles from the coast of Gaza before being illegally and violently rammed by an A833D israeli vessel and subsequently intercepted.
428 unarmed civilians from more than 40 countries have been illegally kidnapped by one of the most heavily armed militaries on earth: doctors, journalists, students, organizers, lawyers, parents, and human rights defenders. They were sailing to break israel’s illegal siege and open a humanitarian corridor to the Palestinian people that are being starved, displaced, and genocided by the israeli regime.
The regime knew the participants were unarmed and peaceful, yet they proceeded with violent escalation because they wanted to send a clear message of intimidation to anyone who challenges the genocide, and the impunity and complicity that enables it. The iOF opened fire at civilian participants across six different vessels, used water cannons against civilians and intentionally rammed a flotilla vessel.
The War Room Confession
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with his senior cabinet ministers and naval commanders crowded into the Navy's operational war room to personally direct the assault on a patchwork of civilian sailboats, fishing vessels, wooden motorboats, and dinghies. Netanyahu congratulated his forces for working "quietly" to foil what he called a plan to break the “isolation” Israel is imposing on Gaza.
Isolation is not incidental to the system they defended. It is the system itself, and systems of isolation do not maintain themselves. They require walls, guards, weapons and the silence and complicity of countries around the world.
This is why a civilian flotilla of small boats was met with a massive naval response from the israeli regime.
No state deploys its highest levels of command against unarmed civilians unless something deeper than physical security is being threatened. What was threatened here was not territory. It was the narrative—the same narrative that has kept the world silent as Palestinians have lived under occupation, abuse and apartheid for nearly 80 years.
European governments were forced into exposing their double standards. Media systems fractured under proximity. The blockade stopped appearing procedural and began appearing as it is: a brutal system of enforced starvation, confinement, and collective punishment maintained through violence, silence, and a false veneer of legality.
To those who orchestrated this interception: you did not stop this movement. You intercepted wood and steel. The narrative has already collapsed. And once that collapse begins, it does not return to silence.
428 People Are Missing. Their Governments Must Act Now.
The 428 abducted flotilla participants are currently unaccounted for. They have had no contact with legal counsel. They have been denied consular access. Their families have not been informed of their whereabouts.
We call on their governments and world leaders to demand their immediate and unconditional release and to ensure their right to consular and legal access without further delay.
Their detention is an extension of the same system that has kept nearly 10,000 Palestinian political prisoners and hostages held under an even more brutal architecture of confinement, coercion, and colonial violence. What has already been documented is not aberration. It is a pattern. Testimonies from flotilla participants released after the previous interception earlier this month, describe torture, physical assault, and sexual violence.
Independent rights organizations, including Save the Children, have documented that more than half of the Palestinian children detained by israel report sexual abuse, sexualized violence, and systematic torture. This pattern of sexual violence is systematically operating without interruption.
Gaza and the West Bank are where that structure is most illustrative. They are where weapons are tested, surveillance systems refined, and techniques of enclosure normalized before being exported into policing regimes, border infrastructures, prison systems, and governance models across the world.
Steadfastness Is What Remains
The iOF intercepted vessels, but it did not intercept our commitment to stand with Palestine.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is one expression of a widening global field of resistance. Within hours of the interceptions, over 500,000 people around the world sent letters to their governments demanding urgent action and accountability. Direct-action and protests intensified across ports, city centers and in front of companies complicit in supporting israel’s machinery of war. Hundreds of other protests are being planned for the coming days. Legal teams are compiling evidence against the commanders, operatives, and political figures involved in israel’s brutal actions against the flotilla across multiple jurisdictions. Impunity is not a permanent condition, it is enabled and enforced by colonial power structures that must be dismantled.
We sail in the name of a people who have resisted erasure for almost eighty years. We are rooted in Sumud: steadfastness under conditions designed to eliminate it. We will continue by land and by sea. We will continue to disrupt the machinery that sustains israel’s impunity and occupation. We will continue to widen the fractures that are already visible. We will not stop until the siege is broken, the Palestinian political prisoners and hostages are free, and Palestinian liberation is realized.
Free Palestine.
